Easy Irish Soda Bread
Print RecipeIngredients
- 4 Cup all purpose flour
- 1 Tea spoon (tsp) baking soda
- 1 Tea spoon (tsp) salt
- 2 Cup buttermilk
- 1 Tea spoon (tsp) sugar
Instructions
Traditional Irish sodabread recipes contain only 4 ingredients which are flour, buttermilk, baking soda and salt. It was also cooked in an iron dutch oven. Many variations have been created over the years such as adding raisins or other fruit or glazing it with icing making it more “cake like.” When raisins are added, it is referred to as a “spotted dog.”
Take a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and set aside. Preheat your oven to 200 C Degrees. Mix all of the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl and add the buttermilk. Buttermilk can be replaced with 150ml (1⁄4pint) milk and 150ml (1⁄4 pint) natural yoghurt. Stir until everything comes together and then turn the dough out on a floured surface. Knead the dough for only a minute resisting the urge to do more. The dough should not be overworked, it is important! Form the dough into a disk and place in your baking sheet. The dough won’t touch the sides. Cut a cross in the dough about a half in deep all the way across. A cross cut is made on top of the loaf before baking to allow the bread to stretch and expand. Immediately put into oven and bake for about 40 minutes until the slash widens and the bread is a nice golden brown.
Store the Irish bread for a day wrapped and at room temperature
